Q. How long has Spellex been in the spell-checking industry?

The core Spellex spell checking engine has been in existence since 1988. It formed part of a flagship line of Spellex products featuring our plug-in industry spell checking software for Microsoft programs. The SDK was initially developed and released in 1997. Since its release, it has been the spell checking software solution of choice for many commercial and in-house applications (see our customer list for more information).

Q. Does the Spellex SDK for Java Technology work with text components other than TextAreas or JTextAreas?

The Spellex engine does not work with user interface components directly. It obtains words that need to be verified from a class which implements the Word Parser interface. At run time, the Spellex engine calls the WordParser-based class's getWord method to obtain the next word to spell check. WordParser supports other methods your application can call to correct misspellings, undo previous changes, etc. The Spellex SDK for Java Technology comes with StringWordParser (used to check the spelling of text contained in Strings) and HTMLStringWordParser (used to check the spelling of text containing HTML markups). Example applications are provided with the SDK which contain the following WordParser-based classes: TextAreaWordParser, which is used to check the spelling of text in an AWT TextArea component, and JTextAreaWordParser, which is used to check the spelling of JFC JTextArea components. Source code for TextAreaWordParser and JTextAreaWordParser are included with the SDK. If you need to check the spelling of text contained in more specialized components, you can modify one of the existing WordParser-based classes.

Q. Can I use the Spellex SDK for Java Technology to check spelling from an applet running in a Web browser?

Yes! You can use the Spellex SDK for Java Technology to add spell-checking capabilities to Web applets. One of the biggest advantages of this feature is that the spell checking takes place entirely within the client -- no servers, servlets, or Common Gateway Interfaces (CGI) are required.

Q. Can I add words to the dictionary?

Yes! The Spellex SDK for Java Technology engine enables your application to open dictionaries, much like a program can open files. When the Spellex SDK for Java Technology checks the spelling of a word, it verifies the word with all open text dictionaries. These text dictionaries are then modifiable; your application can add or remove words from them at runtime. Any number of dictionaries can be open simultaneously.

Q. Can Spellex offer suggested replacements for misspelled words?

Yes! Spellex's SpellingSession class includes the suggest method, which compares misspelled words with its word list and suggests possible corrections for these misspellings.

Q. Does the dictionary just contain words, or words and definitions?

The current version of the Spellex SDK for Java Technology is a highly optimized spell check engine which contains only word lists. Definition dictionaries are currently unavailable through the SDK.

Q. Do I have to use your dialogs, or can I write my own?

Since the SDK is flexible, you can choose to do either or both. Using our dialogs is the easiest approach, but the Spellex SDK for Java Technology engine includes a basic spell check API which you can use to determine if words are spelled correctly, look up spelling suggestions, add words to user dictionaries, etc. The full Java source code for AWT and Swing dialogs is included, so you can customize these dialogs to meet your direct needs.

Q. If we license the SDK, do we need to license the English word list separately?

No -- The SDK includes a compressed American English and British English dictionary.

Q. How do I obtain upgrades?

An annual maintenance contract keeps your software updated with any major or minor upgrades released by Spellex during the year. Your maintenance agreement also provides you with e-mail technical support. You can contact us at any time to enquire about current version numbers, recent changes, etc.
